About Ohio

The term Ohio goes back to the language of the indigenous people, the Iroquois, and means “beautiful river”, which means beautiful river. In 1803 Ohio became the 17th state to join the United States.

In the 18th century, the French were very present and set up an extensive network of trading posts to control trade with the indigenous people. The result was the French-Indian War between the French and Indians. This was ended in 1763 by the Paris Peace and Ohio came under British administration.

Britain initially imposed a ban on settlement, which was lifted after this area gained independence from the British motherland and eventually became what is now the state of Ohio. This was the first state to ban slavery. Ohio offers a variety of different landscapes, state parks and modern cities.

Ohio in the Midwest

Ohio is a leader in mechanical engineering, producing vehicles and various machines. The electrical, metal and tool industries form the economic backbone. Food production and agriculture are strong in the Corn Belt. It is a maize-growing area that runs through large parts of the states in the Midwest.

In addition to milk production and livestock farming, commercial fishing is an important source of income. In the food sector, tomatoes and soybeans are preferably grown. Ohio is one of the states in the Midwest. This name goes back to the time of the first settlements in the West, which was still undeveloped in the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, only the area of today’s east coast states was populated. Everything that went beyond this border was wild, unknown and undeveloped land.

Although Ohio is still comparatively far east, this area was part of the undeveloped west for the first settlers. This included practically everything that went beyond the borders of today’s east coast states. So today’s Ohio area was assigned to the Midwest. This term was also used to distinguish itself from the east coast.

The so-called Frontier, where the real Wild West started, gradually shifted further west. Ohio is bordered by Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Michigan. Lake Erie is located in the north on the border with the Canadian province of Ontario. The Ohio River forms the natural border with Kentucky and West Virginia. Ohio is divided by the Eastern Continental Divide. It is a separation of the catchment areas from rivers that flow into the North Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.

Ohio – not as inconspicuous as expected

In contrast to some other states, Ohio looks inconspicuous at first glance, because gold, silver and national parks of international importance do not exist here. However, those who stay in this state a little longer should give this region a second chance. Five great lakes, 74 state parks, 90 wineries, and the forests and valleys around the Ohio River make up the charm of this state. As the only less well-known national park, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park stands out with the beautiful Brandywine waterfall and a historic railway.
