Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark Law School was established in 1973, with the intent of providing quality legal education to students from all walks of life. The school was founded by Elder J. Reuben Clark, Jr., a prominent figure in the Church of Latter-day Saints and a former ambassador to Mexico. He believed strongly that the highest level of legal education should be accessible to all students, regardless of their background or religious affiliation. The school was named after him as a way to honor his dedication to higher education and his commitment to justice and fairness.
The first class at BYU Law School consisted of only 24 students, but it quickly grew with each passing year. In 1985, BYU Law School received full accreditation from the American Bar Association (ABA). This accomplishment made Brigham Young University J. Reuben Clark Law School one of only three ABA accredited law schools in Utah at that time – a distinction it still holds today among its peers across the nation.
