The construction of St. Patrick’s Cathedral began in 1858 and lasted twenty years. In 1879 it was consecrated and became the largest neo-Gothic religious building in the country. The cathedral has the shape of a Latin cross, built of brown and white marble, and is crowned with 100-meter spiers, which in the 19th century towered over the roofs of the city. Today, against the backdrop of modern skyscrapers, the appearance of the building no longer inspires former awe, but this does not prevent it from remaining the same colossal, beautiful and impressive with its architectural delights.
On March 17, a festive Mass is first held in the temple, in which everyone can participate, and then a parade is held and about two million people dressed in all green – the color of the Trinity symbol – walk along the nearby streets.

The entrance to the cathedral is preceded by huge eight-ton bronze doors, decorated with sculptures of saints. Inside, its arches rise up and, plunging into the twilight, seem to go into infinity. The light that enters the room through the stunningly beautiful stained-glass windows, which the craftsmen have been working on for about a quarter of a century, illuminates the exquisite chapel of Our Lady and the altars of the chapels of St. John the Baptist and St. Elizabeth. Inside you can also see a bust of John Paul II and a Pieta created by the eminent sculptor William Ordway Partridge, three times the size of Michelangelo’s famous Pieta in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
