About Washington DC
As we wrote at the beginning of this long page, America consists of 50 states (do you know them all by heart? 😉 ). Washington DCis a federal territory of 177km2 and the official capital of the United States. The city is directly administered by the federal government and is legally subject to the jurisdiction of the United States Congress. When the United States declared its independence on July 4, 1776 (Independence Day), the fledgling nation of 13 states was governed by a temporary Continental Congress in Philadelphia. In 1787, the Constitution of the United States decreed that there would be a federal capital. The states of Maryland and Virginia jointly provided territory to the federal government as enshrined in the Residence Act of 1790. Washington DC was born.
