About Alabama
The nickname “Cotton State” refers to Alabama’s history as the country’s largest cotton producer. More than 435,000 slaves worked on the large cotton plantations. It was for this reason that Alabama split off into the Confederate States of America in order to preserve slavery. Today, the state is best known for its iron and steel. The North is green and wooded, while the South has beautiful beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. In Alabama they like to barbecue, they drink liters of Iced Sweet Tea and we all know the famous song ‘Sweet Home Alabama’.
