About Hawaii
aloha! Hawaii is by far the most exotic and tropical state of America. This group of 137 volcanic islands did not officially become the 50th state of the United States until 1959. From the year 1810 to 1898 it was even an independent kingdom. The eight main islands are Ni’ihau, Kaua’i, O’ahu, Moloka’i, Lāna’i, Kaho’olawe, Maui, and Hawai’i, also known as “Big Island.” These islands are inhabited. Hawaii also consists of 9 large uninhabited islands, the Papahānaumokuākea Islands, located North West of the Big Island. These islands have protected status as a Marine National Monument. The modern capital of Honolulu on the Big Island is home to more than 340,000 residents. This makes it the 55th largest city in the US. Due to the unexpected Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the United States joined the Allies during World War II. Hawaii has two National Parks, Haleakalā on the island of Maui and Volcanou National Park on the Big Island with two active volcanoes.
