According to USPRIVATESCHOOLSFINDER.COM, Malheur County is located in the southeast corner of Oregon and is part of the greater region known as the Treasure Valley. The county was established in 1887 and has a history that dates back to the 1800s. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Paiute, Shoshone, and Bannock, Malheur County was later settled by fur trappers, miners, ranchers and farmers who came to the area in search of a better life. The region’s rich natural resources made it an ideal spot for settlers looking to make a living off of the land. The area was home to many Native American tribes who relied on its abundant wildlife for sustenance. As settlers began to move into Malheur County they quickly began to develop local industries such as ranching, farming and mining. In 1864 gold was discovered in Malheur County which brought an influx of miners hoping to strike it rich. This led to a population boom and towns such as Jordan Valley, Adrian, Nyssa and Ontario were founded during this time period. The gold rush also brought Chinese immigrants who helped build much of the infrastructure that can still be seen today in Malheur County’s townships. During World War II Malheur County played an important role in providing food for soldiers overseas with its vast agricultural production. After this period ended many people moved away from rural areas in search of better economic opportunities elsewhere leaving behind empty farms across much of Malheur County’s landscape. Today, many of these farms have been replaced with ranches raising cattle or growing hay; however some original homesteads still remain throughout the county’s rolling hillsides and open valleys. Despite its rural nature Malheur County continues to thrive thanks to its strong agricultural industry which produces crops such as potatoes, wheat, corn, alfalfa hay and sugar beets; while also providing ample recreational opportunities such as fishing, hiking hunting and camping making it a great place for visitors seeking adventure or locals looking for a peaceful escape from city life. The Malheur County School District is committed to providing quality education for its students. The district encompasses a total of 13 schools, ranging from elementary to high school.
