About Iowa
Iowa (named after an Indian tribe) is not exactly placed on the main tourist routes for tourists. But that is what makes the relatively unknown “ Hawkeye State ” so special. The nickname is a tribute to the Indian chief “Black Hawk”.
The state motto of Iowa is “Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain”, a very clear indication of how important freedom and political rights are to the people here. As a state in the U.S. Midwest, Iowa is unusually liberal.
The balance of power between the Democrats and Republicans is balanced today and Iowa is a so-called swing state, whereby the Democrats have mostly prevailed in recent decades. In the presidential primaries, Iowa is usually early and, in a way, a trendsetter hoped for by both sides.
The farmer state was surprisingly progressive, particularly when it came to introducing civil rights. The Iowa Supreme Court decided early on against slavery (1839), racial segregation (1868) and racial discrimination (1873). Women were allowed to study law much earlier than in other states. And back in 2009, Iowa legalized marriage of same-sex couples, the third state after Massachusetts and Connecticut.
The western border of Iowa is formed by the Missouri and the Big Sioux River. In the east, Mississippi separates Iowa from the states of Wisconsin and Illinois. Other neighboring countries are Minnesota (north), Missouri (south) and South Dakota and Nebraska in the west.
Iowa is the only one in the U.S. that is bordered by two river systems in both the east and west. Gentle hilly landscapes characterize the state, it becomes flatter in the southeast. The highest point is the Hawkeye Point with a height of 509 m. Some well-known lakes are Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake and East Okoboji Lake, all of which are located in the Iowa Great Lakes region.

Iowa: climate and weather
Climatically, Iowa has the typical climate of the Midwest with a moist, continental characteristic. The winters are cold and sometimes snowy, the summers can be muggy and quite warm. In addition to many thunderstorms, tornadoes are also numerous here and can wreak havoc. However, the state is sparsely populated, so that destruction is usually limited, in contrast to other states.
